Candela PicoWay® Laser

Eric F. Bernstein, M.D.,M.S.E. was the FIRST physician in the WORLD to use and have the Candela PicoWay® laser and led the studies leading to its FDA-clearance. The Candela PicoWay® laser is a new type of laser with an extremely short pulse-duration. The pulses emitted by the Candela PicoWay® laser are less than a billionth of a second. This means that tattoos can be treated in a way they never could before and allows rejuvenation of sun-aged skin and improvement of acne scarring in every skin type. Treating the darkest skin types carried a significant risk of unwanted pigmentation from laser treatment with most other lasers. The Candela PicoWay® laser allows treatment of even the darkest skin types safely and effectively. The Candela PicoWay® laser comes with four different laser wavelengths or ‘colors’ to treat every tattoo color and enables rejuvenation of sun-damaged skin, improvement of melasma and improvement of acne scarring. Dr.Bernstein first showed treatment of yellow tattoo ink with this laser. Dr. Bernstein and his collaborators also published the first peer-reviewed manuscript on removing tattoos with the PicoWay® laser. It delivers multiple wavelengths including: 1,064nm, 532 nm, 730 nm and 785 nm, and can deliver fractionated 532 nm and 1,064 nm laser energy for rejuvenation of sun-damaged skin and treatment of acne scars in any skin type.

Candela PicoWay® Resolve® handpieces

The PicoWay® Resolve® handpieces operate at two different wavelengths: 1,064 nm infrared radiation and 532 nm green light. Dr. Bernstein at Main Line Center for Laser Surgery was the FIRST physician and practice in the WORLD to receive BOTH the PicoWay® Resolve 532 nm and PicoWay® Resolve 1,064 nm handpieces. He and his colleagues performed two pivotal, peer-reviewed studies of these lasers and their use for improving photoaged skin and acne scarring. The PicoWay® Resolve lasers can be used on all skin types with very little risk of creating pigmentary problems. These handpieces focus the PicoWay energy into 101 tiny spots creating immense peak powers at each spot. This results in the ability to rejuvenate sun-damaged and aged skin as well as treat acne scars in all skin types. Thus, treatments can be administered without the usual pigment disruption and pigmentation often seen with other ‘spot’ administering (or fractionated, as they treat a fraction of the total skin surface) lasers. Dr. Bernstein was the FIRST physician in the WORLD to use and publish peer-reviewed manuscripts on the PicoWay® Resolve® handpieces.

PicoWay® 785 nm Laser-Pumped Laser

Dr. Bernstein was the FIRST physician in the WORLD to use and acquire the PicoWay® laser-pumped 785 nm laser. This laser is enclosed in a handpiece and uses the 532 nm PicoWay® laser to stimulate the titanium:sapphire crystal yielding 785 nm laser light. Dr. Bernstein and his colleagues performed a pivotal peer-reviewed publication investigating the effectiveness of this laser for removing tattoos. The PicoWay® 785 nm laser is also quite useful for removing unwanted freckles and pigmentation in all skin types.

PicoWay® 730 nm Laser-Pumped Laser

At Main Line Center for Laser Surgery, we work closely with engineers to help with the development of state-of-the-art lasers hopefully improving them in the process. Dr. Eric Bernstein was the FIRST physician in the WORLD to use and acquire the PicoWay® laser-pumped 730 nm laser, a great addition to the 785 nm laser-pumped laser. These lasers are contained in handpieces that attach to the end of the laser arm for easy and quick transition from one wavelength to another. Dr. Bernstein and his colleagues completed and published a key study on using the 730 nm titanium:sapphire laser for the treatment of tattoos. The 730 nm PicoWay® laser is also great for treating unwanted pigment, such as freckles.

PicoWay® FAQ

What type of laser is the Candela PicoWay® laser?

It is a solid-state laser delivering extremely short pulses of laser energy that are less than a billionth of a second in duration. Thus, the PicoWay® laser can target very small particles such as tattoo granules, pigment-containing cells in the skin, or create microthermal injury zones for skin rejuvenation in all skin types.

What do you treat with the Candela PicoWay® laser?

The PicoWay® laser is used to treat brown spots like freckles or lentigines (kind of bigger freckles), tattoos, and with the Resolve® handpieces, photoaging and acne scarring.

What am the PicoWay® Resolve® handpieces used for and how do they work?

PicoWay® Resolve® handpieces are used to treat wrinkles and acne scars in even the mostly darkly pigmented skin. They focus the PicoWay® energy into very fine beams of energy, 101 beams in a 1 cm² spot, creating fine microthermal treatment zones.

What can I expect to look like following PicoWay® Resolve® treatment?

Generally, patients are pink following PicoWay® Resolve® treatment with very minimal swelling.

Do you ever combine other lasers with the PicoWay® Resolve® laser?

PicoWay® Resolve® laser treatments are often combined with other lasers during the same treatment session such as the Candela VBeam Perfecta®, Candela VBeam Prima®, Cutera Excel V®, Lutronic DermaV® lasers and others. This is possible because the PicoWay® Resolve® laser is both powerful enough to produce long-lasting results and gentle enough to combine with other devices.
