GentleMax Pro® & GentleMax Pro Plus® Laser
Dr. Bernstein was the first physician in the U.S. to get the Candela Medical GentleMax Pro® laser and performed one of the first clinical trials of the Candela Medical GentleMax Pro Plus® laser. The Candela GentleMax Pro® and GentleMax Pro Plus® lasers are the number one hair removal lasers in the country. These lasers combine both an alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser in one laser platform. They evolved from the earlier generation GentleLase Pro® and GentleYAGPro® lasers, which offered a single laser wavelength in each device. They and their predecessors have been mainstays of laser hair removal around the world for decades. The GentleMax Pro® laser incorporates both the 755 nm alexandrite and 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser in a single device, enabling treatment of all skin types with a single laser. The advantages of having two lasers integrated into a single machine for the treating physician, nurse or PA are convenience, a smaller footprint to save space, the ability to quickly change between wavelengths, and economies of cost due to both wavelengths using the same optics, power supply and other components.
At Main Line Center for Laser Surgery, we have been performing laser hair removal for well over two decades. Dr. Bernstein was the first physician in the U.S. to have both the GentleLasePro® and GentleMax Pro® lasers. These lasers offer a dynamic cooling device to protect the surface of the skin while enabling heating of the lower parts of hair follicle for optimal treatment while minimizing discomfort. The versatility of the GentleMax Pro® and GentleMax Pro Plus® lasers enable treatment of all hair diameters and types, except for blond or white hair, which does not respond to laser hair removal. The GentleMax Pro®, and even more so, the GentleMax Pro Plus® laser, can treat large areas extremely quickly due to its quite large spot size and rapid repetition rate. The GentleMax Pro Plus® laser delivers even more energy than the already powerful GentleMax Pro® laser, enabling larger spot sizes and short treatment times for even large areas like the back and legs.

GentleMax Pro® and GentleMax Pro Plus® FAQ
Why do the Candela GentleMax Pro® and GentleMax Pro Plus® lasers have two different wavelengths of light?
People with lighter skin types require a shorter wavelength of light because melanin pigment absorbs shorter wavelengths more strongly. Lighter skin types are treated with the 755 nm alexandrite laser. Darker skin types require longer wavelengths of light and are treated with the infrared, invisible, 1,064 nm wavelength.
Why can’t a 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser be used for all patients?
Longer wavelengths of light (energy really, as technically it’s not light if we can’t see it) are absorbed so poorly, that very high energies would be required to treat people with very light skin types. This can exceed the available energy a laser can deliver, and result in skin damage because too much heat would have to be delivered to the skin. It works to use a long wavelength, 1,064 nm laser to treat light skin, but not nearly as well as a shorter wavelength.
Why can’t a 755 nm alexandrite laser be used for all patients?
Because 755 nm light is more strongly absorbed by melanin pigment than 1,064 nm laser energy, it can affect lightly colored hair with lower doses of light. This means that the laser can ‘see’ light colored hair quite well. The problem for darker skin types is that the laser will also ‘see’ more darkly pigmented skin. We are ‘angry’ at the hair and not at the skin and using a short wavelength in more darkly pigmented skin can injure the skin.
What are some of the main advantages of the GentleMax Pro Plus®?
In the early days of laser hair removal, it took Dr. Bernstein 2-3 hours to fully treat a back or legs. This made treatments uncomfortable, time consuming and expensive. TheGentleMax Pro Plus® can treat someone’s back or entire legs in 10-20 minutes, or even less. Having two wavelengths of laser energy in a single device also makes it possible to treat all skin types.
