Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® Device

The Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® cryolipolysis device is a unique device that exploits the different temperatures at which skin versus fat are injured. Dermatologists learned long ago that children got dimples from fat loss when eating popsicles. Once treated by cold using the CoolSculpting® device, fat cells undergo apoptosis, or programed cell death, and are removed over a period of weeks following treatment. We don’t replace these fat cells, so the results are quite long-lasting. The treatment uses applicators that gently pull the fat away from the body, allowing it to cool over a period of 35-45 minutes. The treatment is non-invasive, gentle, and very well tolerated. Patients often watch their phones or iPads or read a book during CoolSculpting® treatments. Dr. Bernstein at Main Line Center for Laser Surgery was the FIRST practice and physician in PENNSYLVANIA to acquire the CoolSculpting® device. Dr. Bernstein serves on the prestigious CoolSculpting® medical advisory board and has published on the use of the CoolSculpting® device in the peer-reviewed literature.

Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® FAQ

How does the Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® device work?

The Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® device gently suctions skin and fat into the applicator cup and very slowly and precisely cools the fat over a period of about 35-45 minutes.

What happens after the Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® applicator is removed?

Just like when oil gets cold in the refrigerator, your area of fat in the applicator cup gets somewhat firm looking like a roll of cool skin. The skin is pink and cool to the touch. The treated area is massaged over a period of five minutes to break up fat crystals and enhance the results of a CoolSculpting® treatment.

What is apoptosis?

Apoptosis is ‘programmed cell death’ and refers to the process by which fat cells are removed by the body following treatment with the Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® device. Cells are damaged and ‘remember’ they are damaged and slowly die and are removed from the body over the months following a CoolSculpting® treatment. This is why it’s important to wait a couple of months to see what the results of a CoolSculpting® treatment look like.

Will my pants fit more loosely immediately after a CoolSculpting® treatment?

No, in fact, they can feel a little tight for few days after treatment. This actually means that the treatment is working. Part of the way the fat is removed and destroyed is through a mild inflammatory response due to the CoolSculpting® treatment. For a few days, this inflammatory response can make your pants feel a little tighter.

How well does the CoolSculpting® treatment work?

In Dr. Bernstein’s opinion, Zeltiq® CoolSculpting® is far and away the most effective non-invasive device for removing areas of unwanted fat. He has been using it long enough to see results that have lasted over 10 years.
