FACIAL TRAUMA

QUICK EVALUATION AND TREATMENT ARE KEYS

Facial trauma (Maxillofacial injury) involves any injury of the soft tissues or bony structure of the face, skull or jaw. This includes injuries to the facial skin covering, the underlying skeleton, the neck, nasal area (sinuses), the orbital socket, the oral lining, teeth and dental structures. Facial trauma often needs to be evaluated and treated immediately to ensure the most desirable outcomes.

EXAMPLES OF FACIAL TRAUMA:
Lacerations (skin breaks), bruising around the eyes, increased distance between the eyes (may indicate injured bones between the eye sockets), involuntary upper jaw movement (possible fracture in this area), abnormal cheek area sensation.

FACIAL TRAUMA TREATMENT…HOW IT’S DONE
Location and severity of the fracture, age, general health and facial appearance are critical factors in the treatment plan. Ensuring that the facial appearance is minimally affected is important to a pleasing appearance and good emotional health.

Traumatic facial injuries can be blunt in nature, penetrating (severe cuts) and/or avulsive (means loss of facial tissue). In facial traumas of every type, reconstruction of skeletal defects is usually done first. Broken bone injuries (fractures) treatment is similar to that done for fractures in other parts of the body. This is followed by whatever treatment is needed for the soft facial tissues and can be a simple as closing up a wound or more complex procedures, such as doing skin grafting and/or local tissue flaps.
